What is IYUN?

6 semesters | 60 weeks | 180 hours

IYUN is a program of serious engagement with Jewish texts - biblical, rabbinic, medieval, and modern. It combines the broad questions of a survey course with the skill development necessary for life-long learning. It asks questions such as: When, why, and by whom was this text written? What issues and questions does it address? What literary techniques does it use? How was it understood in the past and how did it impact Jewish life? What role does it play in contemporary Judaism and what claim might it make on my own life as a Jew?

You should apply if you are:

A Jewish adult seeking an intensive Jewish studies experience outside a university setting.
Looking for a comprehensive curriculum that fosters a rigorous, non-dogmatic encounter with Jewish texts.
A student who has taken a variety of disconnected classes and now wants a more coherent and directed course of study.
Prepared to make a three-year commitment to the IYUN program.
Knowledge of Hebrew is NOT required.

Classes meet at the Skirball Center at 10 East 66th St. in New York City.
